K.O MBADIWE UNIVERSITY'S VC MAKES CASE FOR GENDER EQUALITY

Ikechukwu Nosike DOZIE

The Vice-Chancellor of Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University, Ideato, Prof. Ikechukwu Simplicius Nosike Dozie has made a case for gender equality and more inclusion of women in national affairs. He made this call at the inauguration ceremony of the Stand-Up for Women Society (SWS) Nigeria held on Thursday, the 24th day of March 2022, at Haven Suites, World Bank Housing Estate, Owerri.

Prof. Dozie who was represented at the occasion by the Acting Director of General Studies of the University, Dr. Mrs. Patricia Chinomso Dozie, stated in his opening remarks, that the theme of the programme, "Women: Bridge Builders", was timely taking into consideration the recent rejection of about five (5) gender equality bills that sought to alter the Constitution by the National Assembly.

He pointed out that the decision of the National Assembly to reject the gender equality bills engendered criticisms and even protests by women as well as civil society groups. Stressing that women are multi-talented and indispensable elements who require both the support of the society and government to actualize their individual dreams.

Furthermore, he encouraged women to be bold and never allow the multifaceted and socially induced limitations evident around them to hold them back from succeeding in their careers, callings and natural roles as mothers and wives. Also, he advised women to look up to God and invest more time in developing themselves by reading inspirational kinds of literature. In addition, he counselled them to join social groups such as the Stand-Up for Women Society, that can bring out the best in them.

In conclusion, the Vice-Chancellor, called on both men and women to live harmoniously, respecting individual roles and supporting one another to achieve full potential in life. He called on the National Assembly to reconsider passing the five (5) gender equality bills into law. Opining that it will further strengthen the roles of women as bridge builders in the society and the country at large.
