Brief Profile of Obinna Anyanwu, PhD
Engr. Dr. Obinna Anyanwu is an ICT administrator, researcher, and academic support professional currently serving as the Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University (KOMU), Ideato, Imo State, Nigeria. He is also the Technical Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor on ICT Matters, a role he has held since 2021. Over the years, he has distinguished himself through visionary leadership, innovation-driven service, and commitment to institutional digital transformation. His contributions have significantly enhanced technology-driven administration, e-learning systems, student services, and data management within the University.
He holds a PhD in Environmental Management from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), an MSc in Sustainability and Environmental Studies from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, United Kingdom, and a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Petroleum Engineering from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri. His academic background reflects a multidisciplinary blend of engineering, sustainability, environmental systems, and digital innovation.
Engr. Dr. Anyanwu’s research interests span ICT for institutional development, sustainability systems, data analytics, digital governance, environmental management, renewable energy systems, and technology-enabled education delivery. He has undertaken notable academic research including studies on Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) in Nigeria’s heavy oil sector and distributed plastic waste recycling for rapid prototyping. He is also engaged in advanced research on nocturnal desalination systems using nano-enhanced phase change materials for sustainable water production and environmental sustainability.
Professionally, he has earned several certifications in data science, analytics, and programming, including the Google Data Analyst Professional Certificate, MIT MicroMasters certifications, and Python specializations from the University of Michigan. These qualifications have strengthened his capacity in data systems, evidence-based decision making, and digital solution deployment.

Through these roles, he has led key initiatives such as digitization of academic processes, online student services, portal management, staff and student identity systems, scholarship coordination, and expansion of digital learning opportunities.
Beyond KOMU, he was appointed Chief Data Officer by the IMSU Visitation Panel (2019/2020) for a special institutional assignment. The successful execution of that assignment earned commendation from the Governor of Imo State, who publicly acknowledged the quality of the committee’s reports and outcomes.
Engr. Dr. Anyanwu has received numerous honours and recognitions for leadership, excellence, and service. Most notably, he was awarded KOMU Man of the Year (Best Overall Staff) for three consecutive sessions: 2021/2022, 2022/2023, and 2023/2024. He has also received commendation letters, leadership awards, community service recognitions, and merit honours from various institutions and organizations including; The Nigeria State Honours Award (NSHA) giving by the Nigerian government to exceptional Nigerian Youth. He made the shortlist for the Scottish Institute for Enterprise: young innovators award in 2014.
He is passionate about community development, youth empowerment, digital inclusion, and mentoring young people to acquire globally relevant skills. His hobbies include technology research, strategic planning, reading, innovation projects, and promoting solutions that create positive societal impact.
